Lindos

Keväisen Rhodoksen matkan yksi mieleenpainuvimmista kohteista oli Lindos ja antiikin aikainen kaupunki. 

Lindos and archeological town were one of the most memorable places where I visited in Rhodes this Spring.

The Old Town

Minä rakastuin Rodoksen vanhaan kaupunkiin. Olisin voinut viettää siellä tuhottomasti aikaa vain katsellen vanhoja rakennuksia ja nauttien kaupungin tunnelmasta. 

Kaupungilla on erikoinen historia ja on vaikea tiivistää sitä lyhyesti. Täältä ja täältä löytyy lisätietoa kiinnostuneille.

I fell in love with the Old Town of Rhodes. I would have been able to spend there tons of time just watching the old buildings and enjoying the atmosphere.

Vanha kaupunki ei ollut mikään läpi käveltävä paikka. Siellä käymiseen kannattaa todella varata runsaasti aikaa. Itse vierailin siellä monta kertaa loman aikana ja söin siellä useana iltana. Vierailin myös argeologisessa museossa, joka aikoinaan oli ritarisairaala ja suurmestarin palatsissa. Molemmat ovat todella vierailemisen arvoisia paikkoja.  

You can't just walk through the Old Town. It's better to take a lot of time for that. In fact, I circled there many times during my holiday. There were many good restaurants and sights in the town. I visited in the archeological museum which was once the hospital of the knights and in the palace of the Grand Master. Both places are really worth for visiting.

Monte Smithin kukkula - The Hill of Monte Smith

Pidän historiasta ja jos matkoillani on mahdollista käydä vanhoilla raunioilla, käytän tilaisuuden yleensä hyväksi. Monte Smithin kukkula sijaitsi kävelymatkan päässä hotellistamme. 

I like a lot of history and if there is some possibility to visit the old ruins during the trip I usually use that opportunity. The Hill of Monte Smith was located only walking distance from our hotel.

Kukkula oli saanut nimensä englantilaisen amiraali Sir Sidney Smith'in mukaan, joka käytti paikkaa tähystyspaikkana tarkkaillessaan Napoleonin laivastoa Ranskan ja Turkin välisen sodan aikana v. 1802.  

Kukkulalla oli aikoinaan muinaisen Rhodoksen  ylempi akropolis ja alueella sijaitsee tänä päivänä ryhmä tärkeitä raunioita.  

The hill was named after a British admiral, Sir Sidney Smith, which used the place when observing Napoleon's fleet during the war of France and Turkey in 1802. 

There was once the ancient Rhodes upper Acropolis on that hill and still today there is a group of important ruins in the region.

Stadion on peräisin todennäköisesti 100-luvulta eKr, josta suurin osa on entisöity. Aamutuimaan stadionia kiersi muutamia ihmisiä. 

Stadium is probably from 1st century BC. Most of that has been restored. 

Stadionin vieressä on pieni teatteri, joka on rakennettu uudelleen valkoisesta marmorista. 

There is a small theater next to the stadium. The theater was re-build from white marble. 

Edellisten yläpuolella sijaitsee Pyhän Apollon temppeli. Niukkojen jäännösten perusteella on voitu rakentaa yksi temppelin kulma uudelleen. 

Above the theater and stadium located the Holy Temple of Apollo. With scarce remnants it is possible to built a corner of temple again.

Näkymä kukkulalta. Kuuleman perusteella, paikalla kannattaisi vierailla ennen juuri auringonlaskua. Näkymä on silloin erityisen kaunis. 

View from a hill. I have heard that the place is worth visiting just before sunset. The view is then particularly beautiful.
